Casual Sexism
Now the word “Google’d” has become a standard part of everyday jargon (even the non-geekiest of people know what it means!) then it should follow that the contents of the Google search page will have an impact such that it can start shaping society… hence, it’s always a little disconcerting when a little bit of casual sexism slips though…
The irony here, of course, is that those in the know are more than aware that the contents of that page are more than likely shaped by a) monitoring the search mistakes people have made in the past (it’s very clever), and b) based on what is already on the net. So actually, it’s us that’s making Google sexist. Makes me worry that if we ever do figure out AI, it will be inherently flawed… as it is going to have to learn from us.
